All parents want their children to be contented with their lot, walk the good correct path and be God-fearing, virtuous and educated for good deeds.

Lately we hear parents who experience difficulties in educating their children, and in some extreme cases, God forbid, things go downhill to places that are entirely inappropriate.

Our Rabbis of blessed memory wrote some alarming and some encouraging things in regard to the virtue and segulah of lighting candles for the righteous, when it comes to delight (Nachas) from the kids, and many participated and were blessed with salvation.

As it is written in Likutei Halakhot, Orach Chaim, Laws for Morning Blessings 5:47:1, one must know that the decree of destruction doesn’t apply solely when one leaves Jewish orthodoxy to become Christian or Muslim, but also when one or one’s relative goes astray that the decree of destruction applies, and therefore it’s a wonderful segulah to light a perpetual candle for the righteous.

In ss”k שש”ק ח’ה אות קכ’ו)) there is a tale of a girl that went astray to the point she converted, Lord have mercy, and her father came weeping to Rabbi Nathan and asked for his advice. And Rabbi Nathan told him to take upon himself to supply the olive oil for the perpetual candle, as it is written in Sefer HaMidot that the perpetual candle saves from the decree of destruction. And he accepted this duty and persisted, and indeed his daughter returned to the straight and narrow. So there is segulah in it to save one’s children from evil inclinations.
